085: The Brand ED Bullet, Issue 24
Robby: You're listening to the Brand
ED Bullet from the Brand ED Podcast.
Four freaky fast Friday wins to
get you going for your weekend.
Let's go.
Win number one, something to try.
Ever wish you had another email address
when you're testing out your stuff online,
like you're testing out online forms on
your website, you're checking an email
automation that you've created in convert
kit or MailChimp, or you're trying out
your funnel workflow for a webinar signup.
Here is a killer hack.
Many email hosts like Google or
Gmail, let you create unlimited
variations of your email.
So if your email address was
john@gmail.com, here's how this works.
You take your email, john@gmail.com.
You add a plus sign after your name, John.
And just before the, at symbol at Gmail.
So that would be something like
John plus test01@gmail.com.
And you can do that as
many times as you want.
John plus test02@gmail.com.
You can keep switching those up.
As you try out your form.
Your automation or your funnel when I'm
testing my setup for almost anything, I'll
use this trick and include an increasing
number in my tests like John plus sign up.
Oh, one sign of bow to sign up.
oh3@gmail.com.
That way.
I always know which one worked.
Bonus hack.
This also works when signing up
for freebies online like giveaways
or newsletters or lead magnets.
I usually sign up as
Robbie plus newsletter.
At Robbie f.com.
It makes finding all of my newsletter
sign-ups easy when I look at my inbox.
To see if it works with your email,
just try sending yourself a test
to name plus test@yourdomain.com.
If it works, let me know
by replying to Robbie plus.
It worked@robbief.com.
Win number two, something
a client recently asked.
I recently turned the tables
on my mastermind group.
I gave them a fictitious friend
who was starting a new business
for custom made fly fishing rods.
They're fake friend, then ask
them a very real question.
Their friend said, Hey, I'm
struggling to compete against
bigger fly fishing rod brands.
So how do I grow my business?
Now, none of us in the mastermind group
know anything really about fly fishing,
but that didn't stop me from asking them.
So what would you tell your friend?
We fumbled around for about 10 plus
minutes until I brought them back
to some simple, fundamental training
that we've walked through dozens
of times in the mastermind group.
Hint it's based around my radical
empathy brand framework that i've
talked about on this podcast.
This process helps them discover
what they do and don't know
about building a business.
So, what would you say to your friend?
I'd love to know.
Win number three,
something to think about.
I find myself believing this too often.
Quote, "when something you do is
successful, it's tempting to think the
outcome was the plan from the beginning.
End quote.
The more accurate truth is
plans are very, very messy.
The outcome is often unpredictable
or sometimes even unexpected.
But boy is attempting to step off the
podium, hit the press conference and
craft a narrative and hindsight where we
say, well, this was my plan all along.
The lesson for me is twofold.
Number one, avoid a tidy narrative
that makes it come across like
this was my plan all along.
i knew this would help me win first place.
And number two, make success
trying things in the first place.
Not winning.
What's the one thing you need to try
next week even if success is unclear
Win number four, something personal.
I spend most Friday and Saturday
mornings with a good friend who
happens to be an amazing therapist.
And on Fridays we often have coffee
for about an hour on Saturday.
We'll go take a walk
several miles together.
At a local park.
Now it's after he runs an insane
distance at an insane pace.
I just joined him for the walk
after he's done the hard part.
It's not any sort of formal therapy, but
it's very therapeutic for both of us.
We don't share the same business
space and he's not a personal brand
and I'm not a professional therapist.
And that's part of what makes the
relationship and the dynamic therapeutic.
It's the differences.
It's the different perspective
and it's the friendship.
